チャンバワンバ、2年ぶりの新作を発表

　ポップなメロディの一方で、歌詞では過激なメッセージを主張する、英国の闇鍋ポップス・バンド、チャンバワンバ（Chumbawamba）。全英No.1にも輝いた、ダンサブルな異色のシングル「タブサンピング」（97年）のヒットでも知られる彼らが、いよいよニュー・アルバムを発表します。

　新作スタジオ・アルバムの発表は、2006年の『Singsong and a Scrap』以来、約2年ぶり。前作にも参加した英トラッド・ロック・バンドのオイスター・バンドらをゲストに招き、アコースティック・ギター、アコーディオン、トランペットなど、温かなアコースティック・サウンドを軸にした全25曲が収録されています。アルバム・タイトルは『The Boy Bands Have Won』（写真）と呼ばれていますが、正式なタイトルは800字を超えるものとなるようで、発売は英国にて3月3日を予定しています。彼らのMySpaceページでは、素朴なメロディが好印象の新曲「Add me」の試聴も可能となっていますので、気になる方なら訪れてみては？

The boy bands have won, and all the copyists and the tribute bands and the TV talent show producers have won, if we allow our culture to be shaped by mimicry, whether from lack of ideas or from exaggerated respect. You should never try to freeze culture. What you can do is recycle that culture. Take your older brother's hand-me-down jacket and re-style it, re-fashion it to the point where it becomes your own. But don't just regurgitate creative history, or hold art and music and literature as fixed, untouchable and kept under glass. The people who try to 'guard' any particular form of music are, like the copyists and manufactured bands, doing it the worst disservice, because the only thing that you can do to music that will damage it is not change it, not make it your own. Because then it dies, then it's over, then it's done, and the boy bands have won.
